Two post-conference scientific excursions to the North Shore of Lake Superior and the Lake Itasca region of northern Minnesota are planned. The North Shore trip will travel along the Lake Superior highlands toward the Canadian border and will visit small “wilderness” lakes via the Superior Hiking Trail, cascades and waterfalls of the many high-gradient North Shore streams, and the cliffs and promontories of Lake Superior. The Itasca region trip will travel to the head-waters of the Mississippi River and the prairie-forest border country where old-growth pine forests, native (remnant) prairies, the paleo-shorelines of Glacial Lake Agassiz, and sites of paleolimnological legend (such as Elk Lake) will be the scientific and natural history focus.
